Karate, Kung-Fu, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu,

Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Thai Boxing

At Odessa Martial Arts Club in Odessa, Fl we practice the art of Taekwon-Do. A common question I've heard by many is "What is the difference between all the martial arts?" Well let me try to explain this a bit.

Martial Arts is a big sense of pride for the country in which it was developed. Let's go through a list of these:

Taekwon-Do = Korea

Karate = Japan (Okinawans, Miyako people, and Yaeyama) and China

Kung Fu = China

Judo = Japan

Jujutsu = Japan

Aikido = Japan

Muay Thai = Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Malaysia

Now let's get into the basic differences.

Taekwon-Do = Highly focused on kicks. Flashy (jumping, spinning, and high) kicks are most likely to come from this art.

Karate = Similar to Taekwon-Do but less empashis on kicks especially flashy kicks.

Kung Fu = Greater emphasis on stances and upper body strength.

Judo = This a grappling art. The goal is to wrestle down and control your opponent.

Jujutsu = Art of grappling, wrist locks, escapes from grabs and chokes, and encompasses many throws and falls. Few punches and kicks.

Aikido = Aikido incorporates a wide range of techniques which use principles of energy and motion to redirect, neutralise and control attackers.

Muay Thai = This is a boxing martial art that focuses on the use of shins, feet, knees, andfists and elbows,to strike the opponent.

What Do They Have in Common

Martial Arts teaches you bare heanded self defense (not needing a weapon). Most martial arts encompass kicking, punching, blocking, escapes from grabs and self defense from an attack. Many classes incorporate forms (choreographed set of moves) and also sparring (2 opponents compete in a ring). Board Breaking is shared in many martial art classes but it is up to the instructor whether or not he or she incorporates this into the class. Most martial arts have a system of rank (belt degrees) and formal tests. Martial art tournaments often hold divisions that allow different martial arts to compete at the smae competition.

Martial Arts share the same benefits. They all improve:
